Finding Your Passion through Christ

Posted on by Heidi Brunsting

There’s a great article that was recently published on Huffington Post in regards to teens finding their “passion” – that thing that they will devote themselves to, pouring their hearts and lives into for the next 60+ years. Today’s youth are looking beyond themselves for purpose and meaning. And while I agree with the author in the sense that a specific passion is unlikely to appear in the teenage years (and the exact look of any passion can change many times over a lifetime) and takes time to grow, often through many learning-jobs, there is one huge piece of the puzzle he is missing.

God

Searching for the purpose, meaning, passion of our lives without looking to the Writer of our hearts is like going clothes shopping for a pen pal whose sizes you don’t know. Sure, you may have an idea of their style based on the things you know they like to do, but, chances are, most of your purchases won’t fit your long-distance friend very well. In the same way, we may get glimpses of who God has created us to be from the way He has designed us to think, act and respond, but without living in relationship with Him it is impossible for us to get the “fit” of our passion just right.

Do you know a teen who is searching for their passion apart from God? Talk with them, engage them in conversation and share how God has shaped your own passions. Invite them into community with other young Christians like your church’s youth group or Youth for Christ. Be an active part of their lives!

We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails.
(Proverbs 19:21, The Message)
